Trip Preparation
Dress Code
Seminars are arranged in an academic setting. Therefore, we ask that groups dress adequately for these events.
However, the dress code for WSC social justice work is casual (i.e. long pants, closed-toe shoes, no tank tops). Please remember that in addition to the health code requirements of many of the program sites, you are also representing your own organization and the WSC.
Transportation
Except for getting to and from social justice service sites, which usually offer parking space for volunteers, you will want to plan on walking or taking public transportation around the city. Trying to park in Washington can be a test of patience.
The WSC is conveniently located within walking distance of the major tourist attractions and the Metro, Washingtons excellent public transportation system of subways and buses. Visit Metro's website at www.wmata.com and click on "The Ride Guide" for help in determining the best route to your destination. The WSC is close to two Metro stops: Eastern Market and Capitol South on the orange and blue lines. There is also a large Metro map in the Center.
Parking
Usually, three parking spaces are available for WSC guest use. Each space can accommodate a 15-passenger van. However, if you are the larger of two groups staying at the WSC, you are only allowed two parking spaces.
Further parking slots can be obtained at Union Station (http://www.unionstationdc.com/).
Please make sure you call the WSC Director a week before your arrival to verify the availability of parking.
Keys
If you arrive before 5 p.m. on a weekday, the Director will greet you and let you into the WSC. If you arrive after 5 p.m. or on the weekend, the Director will provide provide a code to a key lockbox so that you can let yourselves in. Extra sets of keys will be issued upon arrival.
Local Restaurants
Capitol Hill has numerous restaurants offering different types of cuisines. A list of restaurants with addresses and price ranges is available.
